Northside Festival Fun

Hey, fun-lovers!

This weekend is Brooklyn's very own Northside Festival. That means 96 hours of non-stop imbibing of music, art and cold beverages.

We will be open today and tomorrow for Northside Open Studios, Saturday and Sunday, June 18th and 19th, from noon until 7pm. Come on by!

If you need to re-up yourselves with more frosty beverages to beat this summer heat (or help you climb out of last night's hangover), we've got you covered. What's even better than a frosty beverage? That's right, sweets from The Starving Artist Bakery! I know that most of you don't believe me that sweets are better than frosty bronsons, but that is only because you have not yet tried first hand the tasty cakes, brownies, and pies by local bake-tress Neilie Meyer. I have it on excellent authority that Neilie's famous espresso truffle brownies will be making an appearance and those you will not want to miss. Join us for a brew and a sweet starting at 4pm tomorrow, June 19th!!

This is the last weekend of Jenny Morgan's wonderful, spectacular, amazing show, One and the Many, so on Sunday we will be having a closing party in honor of both the show and the Northside Festival. There will be more cold beverages, fun people and LIVE MUSIC!

Singer/songwriter Tim Pourbaix will be providing us with tunes to rock out to while we take in One and the Many for the last time (sob). He will be playing on Sunday, June 19th from 4pm -4.30pm and again from 6pm - 6.30pm, and the fun will continue until 7pm.

We hope you stop by and partake in our Northside festivities, but make sure that you see all that the festival has to offer!

And, just as a reminder - our Matt Stone show, Tectonics, will be opening on Friday, June 24 at 6.30pm - 9pm. We'd love it for you to come see that, too!

Tim Pourbaix performs at One and The Many Closing Event!

Tim Pourbaix, singer/songwriter and current Brooklynite, will be performing at Like the Spice Gallery on June 19th from 4-4:30pm and 6-6:30pm in honor of the closing of Jenny Morgan's exceptional solo exhibition, "One and the Many". This will also be concurrent with the Northside Open Studios events taking place right here in Williamsburg! Saturday, June 18th, and Sunday, Juen 19th, mark the days of this awesome weekend filled with artist open studios and gallery events, click here for more info on who is participating what what should not be missed! We can't wait for Tim's performance, it is going to be a really great event. What better way to celebrate Northside and summer with live music and great art? Tim's work has been described as “Naked and immediate, the songs throb with raw emotion and an honesty that borders on confession. The absence of frills and any kind of studio magic allows the clarity and sincerity of Pourbaix’s writing to shine through.” -heyreverb.com

So come feast your eyes and ears at Like the Spice this Sunday!

So many layers and flavors!

Our artist dinner with Jenny Morgan, "A Layered Menu," went spectacularly last Friday. It was a hot day that turned into a cool summer night and we were all able to enjoy it here at Like the Spice. With the white wine flowing and the wonderful workings of Gite catering, Jenny and guests happily chatted away about her recent and past projects before Marisa asked her to speak.

And then it was time for Jenny to take the stage; she spoke eloquently about her process and subjects and how deeply connected she has felt with all of them. She spoke about the building of a piece, the many many layers that go into making the skin of her subjects look warm enough to touch. The sanding process was also brought up, and how the building and layering are countered with destruction as she sands or uses turpentine to deliberately break down her beautifully rendered hands, faces, and hair. I think the best part was listening to the stories behind each piece; the individual canvases in the show each have their own personal history. It was a treat to be told each one!

In short, it was a lovely evening. Jenny's work was as breathtaking as always and the vibes around the room were nothing but positive. It was a great way to stay cool with the coolest people surrounded by the coolest art! Hope you can join us next time!

Learn to Collect / 2:ND Fridays / You could have won a smart phone / Jenny Morgan Press!

As some of you may know, this past Friday, May 13th, Like the Spice teamed up with AT&T to create the event Learn to Collect.

Participants of the event had the opportunity to win an HTC Inspire 4G smartphone provided by AT&T. In order to win this awesome (and oh-so-functional) trophy, one had to 'create personal art collections' of the works displayed at participating 2nd Friday galleries in Williamsburg by photographing them and posting them to the event's Facebook page. The uploader with the most photos will win the smartphone, and we'll be announcing the winner later on this week.

The gallery crawl was a great success and the twelve participating galleries had hundreds of visitors over the course of the night. Hal Lenox, AT&T's New York State President said, "We were thrilled to sponsor the event which connects galleries with art enthusiasts in this thriving artistic community." You're a pal, Hal.

Check out some of the shout-outs we got from Tusk Strategies, Art Online Galleries and Near Brooklyn!

Check out art blogger Heidi Alamanda's great photos of Jenny Morgan's One and the Many opening here!

Eyes Towards the Dove also has some great things to say about our current exhibit!

Be sure to RSVP to our monthly dinner series for this month's A Layered Menu and an opportunity to speak with artist Jenny Morgan about her latest series of work!

One and the Many, Many, Many

Best Friday the 13th ever! Last night was the opening for Jenny Morgan's fabulous show, One and the Many.

The almost surreal subjects of Jenny's paintings (many of whom were in attendance - in the flesh) gazed wistfully out at the excited attendees who stared right back, trying to determine exactly what the figures were saying with their eyes. Everyone was utterly blown away with the magnitude and subtle depth of Jenny's most recent body of work. Guests mingled and sipped one and many glasses of wine, but it was difficult to lose focus on the artwork itself.

It was great to see the art-hungry crowd and the look of pride on the artist's parents faces (they were visiting from Utah!).

Anyone look familiar?

We were able to see the models of the portraits right next to their painted depictions and realize just how talented an artist Jenny Morgan is.

Last night we unveiled a set of unique silkscreen prints (50 editions) of Mimic, which are available for purchase. They are beautifully printed on Canson printmaking paper and are available framed and unframed. Some of the editions were sold last night and they are continuing to head off to their new homes - so get one while you can!

We had a fantastic turnout (and so much fun!) and we'd like to thank everyone for coming. Make sure to RSVP for our monthly artist's dinner series, A Layered Menu, for an opportunity to have a scrumptious dinner with Jenny Morgan and hear about her artistic process and inspirations.

Jenny Morgan Press!!

For those of you who have not been watching my facebook page like a hawk, here is your chance to see and read up on all of the amazing press Jenny Morgan and "One and the Many" has received the last few days...

"Working with people from my own life as subject matter allows me to hone in on specifics of their character and present their personalities as I experience them."- Jenny Morgan, Village Voice article , 'ABOUT FACE: Capturing inner beauty one hair strand at a time,' by Araceli Cruz

"I do generally build up the figure in two coats and then sand specific areas. So I have to kind of wait and see what parts to paint according to what I sand, so it goes in different layers. But I do like to build it up and then just tear it down again."- Jenny Morgan for 'Inside the Artist's studio,' for L Magazine, by Benjamin Sutton...L Magazine's wonderful Benjamin Sutton did a feature article on Jenny in which he asks the artist about her specific processes where her titles come from, and what drives her scraping and sanding layers away. It's a really fantastic article, and online you get the full interview which gives such amazing insight to Jenny's work. Definitely a great read!

“This body of work finally had my undivided attention. I was able to work consistently everyday which allowed for this body of work to feel more like a family to me. They are all interconnected.” - Jenny Morgan for Milkmade. This super awesome website is run by the peeps over at Milkstudios in Chelsea; they feature written editorial and blog posts, exclusive photo commissions, cell phone content, and an interactive events calendar. Pretty cool stuff!

Current has re-posted Jenny's feature in this week's L Magazine on their home page!

And just to give ourselves our own little pat on the back, The Guardian included us in their New York City Guide naming us one of the top 10 best art galleries in Brooklyn and Queens! It is an honor to be listed with the Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, P.S. 1, and other greats!

"All things come out of the one, and the one out of all things."-Heraclitus

That's right folks, we are all connected within this big giant universe of ours, and you know what? This is GREAT news because who wouldn't want to be connected to the beautiful and incredibly talented Jenny Morgan? Or at least that is what you will be asking yourself when you attend the opening for Jenny's latest solo exhibition, "One and the Many," tomorrow from 6:30-9:00pm here at Like the Spice. Jenny's newest portraits are filled with life and spirit; stare at one long enough (it's difficult not to) and you honestly feel as though you may be communing with another soul. Through her work it seems that Jenny is able to facilitate these correspondences effortlessly, but we all know that it takes much more to finish a piece. Fragile layers upon layers of paint are laid down with care and then roughed away to create multiple dimensions of depth and color; this pushes and pulls the viewer and the subject from a present reality to a past one. Who are these people? Where do they come from? Why do I feel like the see me? And these are just a few of the questions you might have for Jenny when you see the hauntingly beautiful faces that make up "One and the Many."

"Reality cannot be found except in One single source, because of the interconnection of all things with one another." -Leibniz

Don't Miss the Upcoming Events at Like the Spice!

There are so many great things coming up here at Like the Spice Gallery, and you are NOT going to want to miss them!

Coming up April 8th through May 8th we have Eric LoPresti's solo show: "Different Country." In his newest body of work, Eric creates beautiful American landscapes in his oil paintings and graphite drawings with; they feature soft hues and color gradients that outline test sites, wastelands, and wide open spaces. "Maintaining his established focus on the physical and psychological aftermath of the Cold War, LoPresti renders landscapes bearing the scars of nuclear testing and subsequent environmental clean-up campaigns, especially those near where he grew up, in the desert steppe of eastern Washington state, near the Hanford plutonium production site." His third solo show here at Like the Spice, in "Different Country," Eric pairs spectral color gradients with dark linear elements suggesting a division of territory within each work.

Following Eric's show and (hopefully very few) April showers, May 13 through June 19th 2011 we are proud to present... wait for it... Jenny Morgan's second solo show here at Like the Spice: "One and the Many".

Jenny's figurative painting always has a way of reducing her figures and their viewers down to their spiritual core; by manipulating the oil paint Jenny strips her figures of their outer layers to reveal the inner depths of their person. This engages the viewer in a different way, giving them a closeup of the process as well as the subject. In these new works, Jenny's intense realism merges with surreal imagination, and "despite the traditional beauty of her oil paintings, Morgan actively contradicts simplistically pretty hyperrealism with gritty psychedelia."

And looking even further into the future.... we have sculptor Matt Stone's opening on June 24th, more about that to come so stay tuned!

Edition's: Get 'em While They're Hot!

Like the Spice Spring Collectors' Edition Set was created to give our enthusiasts and collectors the chance to own a piece by each one of the artists featured in solo exhibitions this spring at the gallery. Some of the artists are new to Like the Spice, such as Jason Bard Yarmosky, whose first exhibitions opened in February and did fantastically! Other artists, like Eric LoPresti, have been showing at Like the Spice Gallery since we opened in 2006. Each edition will also be able to be purchased separately during the course of each solo exhibition and will range in price from $280-$800. We promise to keep you updated on upcoming editions for Eric LoPresti's show "Different Country," opening on April 8th, and Jenny Morgan's show, "One and the Many," opening on May 13th...For now, take a look at our two available editions!

Love Jason Bryant's work so much that you need a piece of it? Perfect! Check out his limited edition giclee print of "A Labor of Love". This 16" x 20" beautiful color print can be purchased professionally framed ($480) or unframed($280). Come to the Gallery to see Jason Bryant's current show "Love's Labor Lost" through April 3rd and take a look at the edition in person.

Also available are limited editions from our last show: Jason Bard Yarmosky's Elder Kinder. Also a 16" x 20" print, "Len with Swimmies" is seen above and is available for purchase through the gallery.

Each print is signed and numbered by the artist and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity from Like the Spice Gallery.
