Last night was the opening reception for Matt Stone's current show at Like the Spice, Tectonics.
The geological forms of Matt's sculptures enjoyed an evening surrounded by numerous human beings who spent the night admiring them. Everyone was thoroughly impressed with the scope and magnitude of the artist's most recent body of work. From his minimal, subtle pieces to his gnarled, neon, extraterrestrial sculptures, not a single piece went un-discussed. It was great to see the looks on people's faces as they noted more and more intricacies in Matt's work.
The show was a great success. Even Matt's parents came to show him love!
Many people were overwhelmed with the sheer complexity of the work.
Thanks to everyone who made it out. The show is up until the end of July 31st, so make sure you stop by and check it out - it is truly amazing.
Remember, we will have our monthly artist's dinner series, on Friday, July 8th. This edition is aptly titled Tectonic Plates. Make sure to RSVP for your seat at the table with the artist himself, delicious food and (as always) good company!

Matt Stone Tectonics opens Friday at Like the Spice Gallery
Like the Spice Gallery is delighted to present “Tectonics,” the first solo exhibition by Matt Stone opening Friday, June 24th! Stone's Perilous, playful, and ultimately geological sculptures are like underwater landscapes condensed and rearranged within new spacial contexts. Join us for the opening reception on the 24th from 6:30-9pm, enjoy cool refreshments, good company, and some breathtaking sculpture!
"Stone has affixed his gaze upon geological, geometric and botanic involution. His deeply layered sculptures are riddled with an expanse of materials, ranging from neon foam to cardboard florets, tendrils of resin, and tattered webs of spandex. Large, freestanding sculpture and small singular satellite objects intermingle fluidly on the walls, floor and ceiling. Stone's sculpture balances the obscenities of the environment with flirtatious, and strikingly calculated, ingenuity."

Tim Pourbaix performs at One and The Many Closing Event!
Tim Pourbaix, singer/songwriter and current Brooklynite, will be performing at Like the Spice Gallery on June 19th from 4-4:30pm and 6-6:30pm in honor of the closing of Jenny Morgan's exceptional solo exhibition, "One and the Many". This will also be concurrent with the Northside Open Studios events taking place right here in Williamsburg! Saturday, June 18th, and Sunday, Juen 19th, mark the days of this awesome weekend filled with artist open studios and gallery events, click here for more info on who is participating what what should not be missed! So many layers and flavors!
Our artist dinner with Jenny Morgan, "A Layered Menu," went spectacularly last Friday. It was a hot day that turned into a cool summer night and we were all able to enjoy it here at Like the Spice. With the white wine flowing and the wonderful workings of Gite catering, Jenny and guests happily chatted away about her recent and past projects before Marisa asked her to speak.
And then it was time for Jenny to take the stage; she spoke eloquently about her process and subjects and how deeply connected she has felt with all of them. She spoke about the building of a piece, the many many layers that go into making the skin of her subjects look warm enough to touch. The sanding process was also brought up, and how the building and layering are countered with destruction as she sands or uses turpentine to deliberately break down her beautifully rendered hands, faces, and hair. I think the best part was listening to the stories behind each piece; the individual canvases in the show each have their own personal history. It was a treat to be told each one!
In short, it was a lovely evening. Jenny's work was as breathtaking as always and the vibes around the room were nothing but positive. It was a great way to stay cool with the coolest people surrounded by the coolest art! Hope you can join us next time!

Like the Spice + artMRKT= Frisco4L
I just got off the phone with Marisa and I have the full scoop on Art MRKT San Francisco; in short, Like the Spice is rockin' it!! We have a gorgeous booth (#510 in case you find yourself there;), fabulous art, and incredible visitors! This fair is making waves people, take note! Both Juxtapoz Magazine and the New York Times both have their eyes on Art MRKT San Francisco this year, so cool!
We could not be more pleased and proud to be a part of this fair and to be showing great work by Jenny Morgan, Eric LoPresti, Jason Bard Yarmosky, Treasure Frey, and Jason Bryant.
