It Took Four Years To Arrive But Man, It Was Worth It

How was your Leap Day? You know what would have made it better? If you had been here to join our Leap Day Dinner, which took place on February 29th! Of course, if you were, you'd probably still be sleeping off that delicious food. Really, was that chicken cooked by angels or what?

The dinner was brought to us by Scottadito Osteria Toscana Restaurant. The Scottadito is committed to supporting sound and sustainable practices in the growing and harvesting of our food resources. Their meats are antibiotic- and hormone-free; their seafood is either wild or certified organic. Their dairy, flour, eggs, sugar and produce are certified organic and locally-farmed. What this means is that the food was something that could make a grown man weep. Honestly, everything was good, but we just can't say enough about that chicken!

Accompanied by the exquisite flower arrangements of Stella Goodall, we enjoyed talking to Rachel Beach and Nora Herting, the artists of our current exhibit, Flip, which runs until March 30th. If you haven't, come and see!

Rachel talked about what influenced her work, and how she melds 2D and 3D, making sculptures that draw you in the moment you see them. She told us about her early influences, including her time at Yale, as well as the inspiration she found in minimalist painter/sculptor Frank Stella. Then Rachel spoke so passionately about the joys of the artistic community in Martha, Texas she made us begin to consider a Like the Spice field trip!

Nora was our second honored guest, and she was just as terrific. Nora surprised some of us with the story of how she had worked as a JC Penny's Photo Studio employee, but then surprised all of us with the explanation of WHY she'd taken the job. All of this fed into a discussion of her cheerleader pieces, including a presentation that put the beauty of her pieces into a new framework. Nora was just as much fun as her work would imply, and it was great to have her.

Miss out? Don't make the same mistake twice! Remember that Like the Spice does a monthly dinner each and every month. Our next one is coming on March 28th, so save the date! We'll be sure to get you more details as we get closer. And did we mention the chicken already?

Leap at Flip: Like the Spice Monthy Dinner Series

Leap at Flip: Like the Spice Monthly Dinner Series
On February 29th at 8:00pm, you are cordially invited to spend the most rare of nights dining finely at Like the Spice. Ask anyone who's been to one of our dinners; it's a fantastic time. This month we're featuring organic Italian food from Scottadito Osteria Toscana. Tina Barry had this to say about their food in the Brooklyn Paper: "In Italy, Scottadito means "finger blistering" and refers to lamb chops hot off the grill that are so tasty no one can wait for them to cool. The word could apply to any number of rustic dishes offered at Scottadito."

Their food makes use of sustainable, organic ingredients, many of which are produced by small East Coast farms. In addition to being healthier and better for the environment these fresh ingredients make the food positively delectable! As always, dinners at Like the Spice are vegetarian friendly.

Alongside the delicious and wholesome food, you'll hear from artists Rachel Beach and Nora Herting, the artists featured in Flip, the current show at Like the Spice. They'll discuss their work and process with the gathered diners.

As always Like the Spice sets a glamorous table and this month we're featuring the floral designs of local florist Stella Goodall. Beauty, food and drink for just $50 a plate! Come to the Leap Night dinner at Like the Spice, unless it's your birthday cause you're probably too young to drink with us.

A Vegetarian Friendly Animal Dinner!

Friday, January 25th Like the Spice hosted the latest in its monthly dinner series, the Animal Dinner. Mariyam Nayeri catered the event for a great crowd. The food was delectable from the apple and fennel salad to the sea bass with salsa verde and the chestnut honey pear upside down cake.

Adding to the enjoyment of the evening were Allison Edge and Tatiana Kronberg who each talked about their pieces in Deer Art, why they are drawn to animal imagery and why they think so many artists are using animals in their work at the moment.

Capping it all off was Sharita Star who told us about Chinese astrology's use of animal symbolism, made predictions for a few lucky guests and told us about the coming year based on both Chinese and Western astrology.

Pernod, sponsor of our dinner series, was there again pouring delicious cocktails including Absinthe Minded, a crowd favorite. There was even Pernod dessert made by Mariyam...Pernod affogato with espresso!

In the end it was a wonderful and stimulating evening. Join us for a future dinner and you'll see for yourself how truly wonderful these events are.

Ain't No Party Like A Puppet Party.

As a part of January's Williamsburg Every Second, where galleries in the Williamsburg Gallery Association stay open late on the second Friday of the month to host parties and events, Like the Spice was psyched to host the Castle Critters. These fuzzy trouble makers and their ringleader David Marin entertained and informed gallery visitors as they visited Deer Art: Animal Imagery in Contemporary Art. (Show closing February 3rd...don't miss it!)

We learned about puppet performance, showmanship and a little about life. Then the puppets rocked a little to some of their favorites including Lou Reed, Christina Aguilera, Macy Gray and The Eagles. Not a bad range for felt and craft fur! Check out the video of some of their performances.

At Like the Spice, we've got a history of making guests feel at home. This month is no different, as we host a dinner fit for the king of the jungle! Come enjoy our Animal Dinner, themed to match our current show, Deer Art. This month's dinner is catered by Mariyam Nayeri, who included a mission statement with her menu. She writes, "Our approach to food is rooted in creating beautiful and simple dishes using fresh, seasonal and local ingredients that are served with passion and style." We've seen the menu and it looks delicious (here's just a little preview: pan roasted sea bass with salsa verde, roasted chicken with lemons and herbs, and sweet onion tart with rosemary ... plus more!)

Our Animal Dinner offers you a night that's positively soaked in art. As you dine you'll enjoy a talk by Tatiana Kronberg and Allison Edge two of the artists participating in our current group show, and then 2008 is the year of the rat in Chinese astrology our very special guest will speak about what is to come in the new year! Served family style in the gallery itself, our dinner series is designed to let you enjoy a scrumptious meal while having a thoughtful conversation with strangers.
