Like to Spice plays host to the musical madness of Tim "Love" Lee and a preview of our newest exhibition The Variegated Landscape opening officially next Friday. Currently residing in New York City, Tummy Touch Records and Boy Scout Records head honcho, artist and international DJ extrordinaire Tim "Love" Lee released his latest studio album this past July. "Against Nature" is an inspired blend of cinematic soundscapes and idiosyncratic soul. Sit back and let your headphones take you on a psychadela-sonic journey. Tim will play a selection of new compositions, hits from "Against Nature" and whatever else he feels at the moment from 8:30-10:30 at LTS.

Within our lifetime, our understanding of the relationship of people to the environment has changed dramatically. The Variegated Landscape, curated by Eric LoPresti, showcases six contemporary artists: Paul Whiting, Peter Rostovsky, Steve Robinson, Mary Mattingly, and collaborative artist pair Melissa Dubbin & Aaron Davidson. While each artist in The Variegated Landscape is unique, together their works constitute a reflection on the contemporary landscape, a place where history, nature, architecture and technology are fused.

On Friday the 28th Like the Spice hosted an amazing dinner, the first in a monthly series of dinners featuring inventive delicious food and talks by artists. This premiere dinner focused on issues of sustainability and climate change, issues explored in the current show, Anna Druzcz: Endemic Constructions.

Artist Eve Mosher gave a talk about her highwaterline project which marks the places in and around New York City likely to become unlivable in the near future because of climate change related flooding.

The food, catered by Urban Spring, was produced as close as possible to the gallery, most within 100 miles, making it low emissions and it was all farmed by small organic farms.

The combination of food, thought and art was very successful. The sold out event was a fun chance to meet interesting people in a relaxed setting with amazing thoughtful food. Watch out for the next installment of this monthly dinner coming to Like the Spice later this month.

House Of Malcontents Lecture Thursday October 4th at Like the Spice

House Of Malcontent

House of Malcontent is a Brooklyn-based art collective finding its inspiration in the possibilities of transforming mundane, everyday spaces in New York, and seeing what happens next. Due to the guerilla, non-permit-seeking nature of their work, it is uncertain how long the installations will remain intact, and how bystanders will receive them. The city of New York is as much a collaborator in their projects as the individual artists are.

The first project by House of Malcontents was the guerilla subway-redecorating scheme “No Train Like Home”, which took place on a single car of the F train in April. H.O.M. temporarily replicated a living room, inviting all who stepped into the car to feel more at home on their way to work, school, or wherever they were headed. Welcome mats affixed to the floor in front of each door greeted early-morning commuters. Curtains adorned the windows, flowers covered the overhead bars, and magazines were distributed for reading pleasure. “Family portraits” and images of bookshelves temporarily replaced subway ads.

H.O.M. followed that up with "Curiouser and Curiouser: Curiosities and a High Art Tea" in mid-July. “Curiouser and Curiouser was an Alice in Wonderland-themed guerilla tea party and art exhibition held in Central Park, along with games of croquet, refreshments, and musical guests on accordion, ukulele, and harp.

House of Malcontents plan to present a lecture, rather than a performance, but who knows? Come visit Like The Spice on October 4th at 7:30pm and enjoy.

On September 28th starting at 7:30pm, dine with Like The Spice and Urban Spring for a environmentally friendly 100 Mile Dinner including Eve Mosher and Anna Druzcz.

The challenge of the 100 Mile Dinner is to create an exciting and nutritious menu using only ingredients that have come from within a one hundred mile radius, resulting in an eco-friendly and sometimes adventurous meal. The experienced team at Urban Spring are dedicated to making delicious food with an eye toward sustainability and the future of our planet. A selection of local wines will also be provided.


In attendance will be artist Eve Mosher, currently involved in her piece High Water Line. Eve is traveling the coast of New York, marking the shoreline with chalk and placing beacons to illustrate how and to where the water line could likely rise within our lifetimes. Her raw data comes from environmental and scientific journals and studies. She holds an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (with a major in sculpture and a minor in photography) and a Bachelors of Environmental Design from Texas A & M University (with a major in architecture and a minor in photography). Eve will be passing the Williamsburg area between September 28th and September 30th, marking from Battery Tunnel to Williamsburg Bridge & Brooklyn Bridge Park. On the 28th, Eve will be placing beacons here at Like The Spice, and plans to discuss both the science and art behind her exciting project. In conjunction with the 100 Mile Dinner is our current show, Anna Druzcz:Endemic Constructions, a series of photo manipulated landscapes that illustrate the clash and join between man and environment. Artist Anna Druzcz will be here in person to discuss her art, as well as the role of environmental issues within her work. Born in 1979 in Poland, Anna began her formal training at Beal Arts Secondary School's Vocational Art Program in London, Ontario. Following vigorous experimentation in a variety of mediums she chose to continue her undergraduate studies in photography at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto. Currently, she is pursuing a MFA in Photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Endemic Constructions is on display until October 7th.

Coming in September, Like the Spice Gallery is proud to present Endemic Constructions, the first New York solo show by Anna Druzcz. Endemic Constructions features digitally composed photographic landscapes cobbled together from organic and synthetic sources, ranging from small works to large-scale images. Constructed, not born, these frankenplaces explore the threat aimed at nature by technology and vice versa, twisting familiar urban landscapes into dystopian playgrounds.


Born in 1979 in Poland, Anna Druzcz's initial training in studio arts began at the Beal Arts Secondary School's Vocational Art Program in London, Ontario. Anna continued her studies in photography at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto and earned her Master's degree in Fine Art Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. There, through a combination of photographic and digital techniques she built her current visual methodology.


Anna was awarded the title of "International Fine Art Photographer of the Year 2004 - Non-Professional Category" for a selection from her Maskarada Series at the International Photography Awards, placing second the following year. Her work has been included in shows at Gallery 621 in Florida, A.I.R. Gallery in Chelsea and at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art.

Featuring works by New York-based emerging and established artists, Drawn and Quartered surveilles and surveys the expanded field drawing occupies in 2007.

All works in the show are drawings 11”X17” and under. Artists invited to participate were given no other restrictions; allowing for a multitude of media, approaches and subjects. They were also encouraged to creatively stretch the boundaries of what can be a drawing. In addition to traditional drawing materials like pen, ink, and pencil the show also includes digital drawings, collage with drawing elements and linear paper constructions.

The works in this show hover between glamour and banality, fear and awe, history and disposability, memory and quotation. The small scale enforces an economy of means if not of meaning. The artists take cues from such diverse and perverse phenomena as Classic Science Fiction, postcard photography, Audobon prints, petroglyphs, the Northern Renaissance, goth fashion, the sex lives of the Roman Emperors, graphic design, dangerous animals and suburban sprawl. This show is about exploring the new possibilities of this refreshed art form and presenting many of them together.

June 21st Like the Spice creates music with Make Music NY

Like the Spice Celebrates Summer With the Make Music New York Festival

On Thursday, June 21st Like the Spice is acting as one of the many venues for the Make Music New York Festival. Based on France's Fete de la Musique the festival celebrates the first day of summer with streets full of free music. Since it was inaugurated in France 25 years ago, the idea has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 300 cities in 108 countries, including Germany, Italy, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, Australia, Vietnam, Congo, Cameroon, Togo, Columbia, Chile, Mongolia, and Japan – this will be the first year that New York will participate.

Like the Spice is hosting six bands from 5-7pm on the sidewalk in front of the gallery. Come celebrate with great music and barbeque.

Mike. P. Flanagan Smith is a storyteller, actor and folk musician based in the Brooklyn.

Oceanographer frontman Jeremy Yocum makes stripped down, folky gospel country music. Backed by fellow marine scientist Eric Elterman on viola and newcomers Mattley Mountain and Brian Hersey on harmonica and electric guitar (respectively), Yocum has built a quartet out of whiskey watered down with tears.

With bombastic rhythm and explosive guitar, Matt Naas and Charles Joesph Dukehart III will change the way you look at a two-man band. Both classic and new, The Expotentials weave between blues and garage based guitar riffs, strong original song writing, and full force thunderous roar.

Cakes of Light make stripped-down, lyric-centered songs exploring singer/songwriter Jay Dunbar's obsessions with bicycles, turtles, nonviolent revolution, chemo-gnosis and the so-called myth of the Mormon Worms.

Percussionist Brian Osborne is an active performer of improvised music, and has been organizing and participating in DIY music events throughout the US and in Europe for over 13 years. Brian's current projects include George Steeltoe Ensemble, DOSDEDOS, Paper Leg(s), and Blastocyst. Brian collaborates frequently with dancer Elisa Osborne.

Wes Matteu plays with a semi-permanent, rotating ....family of amazing musicians including: Ellen Houle on drums, Shane Leddy on upright and elec. bass, Tom Clark on keys, slide, harmonica, french horn and whatever he feels like that day.....and when they can Dave Birch/mandolin, Kathleen/banjo and sometimes Todd Erk/upright ,marina Phillips Kisse/violin and Chris Sarulo/saw.
