Northside Festival Fun

Hey, fun-lovers!

This weekend is Brooklyn's very own Northside Festival. That means 96 hours of non-stop imbibing of music, art and cold beverages.

We will be open today and tomorrow for Northside Open Studios, Saturday and Sunday, June 18th and 19th, from noon until 7pm. Come on by!

If you need to re-up yourselves with more frosty beverages to beat this summer heat (or help you climb out of last night's hangover), we've got you covered. What's even better than a frosty beverage? That's right, sweets from The Starving Artist Bakery! I know that most of you don't believe me that sweets are better than frosty bronsons, but that is only because you have not yet tried first hand the tasty cakes, brownies, and pies by local bake-tress Neilie Meyer. I have it on excellent authority that Neilie's famous espresso truffle brownies will be making an appearance and those you will not want to miss. Join us for a brew and a sweet starting at 4pm tomorrow, June 19th!!

This is the last weekend of Jenny Morgan's wonderful, spectacular, amazing show, One and the Many, so on Sunday we will be having a closing party in honor of both the show and the Northside Festival. There will be more cold beverages, fun people and LIVE MUSIC!

Singer/songwriter Tim Pourbaix will be providing us with tunes to rock out to while we take in One and the Many for the last time (sob). He will be playing on Sunday, June 19th from 4pm -4.30pm and again from 6pm - 6.30pm, and the fun will continue until 7pm.

We hope you stop by and partake in our Northside festivities, but make sure that you see all that the festival has to offer!

And, just as a reminder - our Matt Stone show, Tectonics, will be opening on Friday, June 24 at 6.30pm - 9pm. We'd love it for you to come see that, too!

Tim Pourbaix performs at One and The Many Closing Event!

Tim Pourbaix, singer/songwriter and current Brooklynite, will be performing at Like the Spice Gallery on June 19th from 4-4:30pm and 6-6:30pm in honor of the closing of Jenny Morgan's exceptional solo exhibition, "One and the Many". This will also be concurrent with the Northside Open Studios events taking place right here in Williamsburg! Saturday, June 18th, and Sunday, Juen 19th, mark the days of this awesome weekend filled with artist open studios and gallery events, click here for more info on who is participating what what should not be missed! We can't wait for Tim's performance, it is going to be a really great event. What better way to celebrate Northside and summer with live music and great art? The Esssence of the Northside

Saturday night the gallery walls were a bumpin' with the sweet sounds of creativity. Three bands - Grasshopper, Drunk Decade, and The Dan Peck Trio, were a wonderful addition to the art which has been happily living on the walls of Like the Spice and in our gallery space. The fact that no pieces fell due to the intense vibrations was a true testament to our competence when it comes to hanging work.


The evening started off with the ska inspired experimental jazz and electronic duo Grasshopper. The dynamic set responded to the energy of the crowd and left us wanting more. See here is Josh blowing hard at his trumpet answering Jesse's electronic prompts.

Next came Drunk Decade. The inspiring solo performance by Michael displayed vigorous multitasking that augmented the positive energy in the room.

The juxtaposition of new age equipment and avant-garde homemade instruments kept us on our toes. So too did the smell of burning rubber (due to the massive amps relative to the small space of our gallery), which in combination with deep vibrations best experienced sitting on the floor, served to complete a total sensory experience.

The night finished off with The Dan Peck Trio. The unorthodox use of bows on the all the instruments ranging from the bass to the drums and tuba produced really satisfying and unusual sounds. Their practiced relating and interconnectedness was really evident in their music.

All in all Saturday night was a smaller scale representation of all that Brooklyn and the Northside Festival has come to represent - a space that fosters a community of creativity and an environment where people come to actively seek an exchange and dialogue of expression. What awesomeness.
